At Athena’s R&D and Racing Dept a team of engineers, led by Giulio Bernardini, with a strong background in all forms of racing applications is fully committed to study and develop the best shapes and designs for our pistons.

In-house static and dyno testing of over 30 hours and sessions on track allows Athena to monitor and examine every detail, putting the highest attention on the skirt coating, the complex dome profiles and the optimized shirt shapes.
HOW IT'S MADE

The gravity casting process is mainly used for the production of pistons for 2-stroke engines. It allows to adopt more complex, resistant and lightweight internal structures.
Using alloys with a high silicon content, it is possible to reduce the thermal expansion rate to which the piston is subjected during operation, ensuring a reduced piston-to-wall clearance and high performance over time.
The backward extrusion process, simply called forging, is used for pistons for 2T and 4T engines.
It creates the supporting structure of the piston by deforming the crystal structure of the material.
It actually increases the mechanical properties such as yield strength (Rp0.2), tensile strength (Rm) and therefore allows a greater resistance to fatigue of the material.
The result is a lighter piston with an extended duration.
