The Brand
In 1888 Dunlop founder John Boyd Dunlop was watching his son riding his tricycle down a cobbled street. He saw straight away how slow the little boy was forced to go, and he decided to let him have more fun on his tricycle. He wrapped thin sheets of rubber, glued together, around the wheels, then inflated everything with a balloon pump. Doing so he invented the first air-bearing system in history. Dunlop quickly patented his invention and turned it into a business, founding what soon came to be known as Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Co. Ltd. In 1890 Dunlop opened his first factory, in Ireland.
